Yahoo! Sectors / Industries

refineryYahoo! Sectors -There are nine sectors in Yahoo! Finance. The Dow Jones has 10 sectors. Click on the red links to view them. These pages will show data about each sector, for persons interested in seeking to learn which area of the overall economy is performing best. In Yahoo!, click on the columns to sort data to see best / worst performing Sectors.

Yahoo! Industries – There are 213 Industry groups. Click on the red link.  When here, look on the left for the link “Complete Industry List”. Clicking this link will show all of Yahoo! Industries, grouped by Sector. In Yahoo! Finance main page, roll mouse over Investing tab, then click on Industries to get here.

When at the Industries main page, click on the top performing industry. Now look to the left again, in the box  “More On This Industry”. Click on “Company Index”. Now find VIEW: and click on Public. This will restrict index to publicly traded companies. Click on a Company name, view the page. Now back up and click on Ticker Symbol and see the difference in info. This is where I get Company details to add to tickers in Personal Stock Monitor. (See Personal Stock Monitor blog)

Industry Analysis -The data / statistics for Industry groups can be viewed a couple of ways. When using the Industries link at the top of this section, then going to a particular Industry, the data / statistics for that Industry is on the right side of the screen.

If you want to compare different industries in different sectors, experiment with the “Neat Cheat!” below. Industry charts will not show up in Yahoo! Portfolios for some reason.

*I often wonder who decides which company gets put in certain industries… This industry should just be combined with “Toys & Games”! It only has TWO public companies,  and one is a “pink sheet”! Other times the company does not fit the Industry group, in my opinion. The same can be said for Dow Jones Industry Group Tracker. They have a Chinese railroad listed in travel & tourism Industry, even though it hauls freight!

I have used Yahoo! Industries to help a friend obtain mailing addresses / Corporate contact info for private companies, stuff that usually does not show up on websites. He was mailing out sponsorship proposals for his race car team.

If you want to track a certain Industry, Yahoo! has charts on all of their industry pages. The symbol is at the top left of the Industries chart.

Do this:
At the Yahoo! Finance main page, look to the left at the “Market Summary”. This displays charts of indexes. Click “Customize Summary” just below the chart. Add ^YHOh877 to the Symbols (must be typed EXACTLY as shown), and name it Railroads. Click Finished. Now just roll your mouse over the data and view the chart!

The only bummer is there is no way to get directly to the industry center using this.

I put every Industry index ticker into a Personal Stock Monitor Account Tab! (See Personal Stock Monitor blog)
