No Room For a Garden?
Even apartment / condominium residents usually have room for a micro-garden, utilizing Square Foot Gardening! This method uses boxes, a type of “intensive row” gardening (link from ag.Arizona.edu).
I originally purchased the book for my significant other (at the time), as she had difficulty growing a garden in our very poor soil. The book piqued my curiosity, and was so inspired by what I read, that I became interested in growing veggies, herbs and flowers! We parted ways prior to experimenting with this method. Since I do not consume “fresh” vegetables other than corn / potatoes, I have never had an inclination to grow anything. Square Foot Gardening looked like fun! So I built a bunch of boxes and grew a variety of things. I had some success with tomatoes, beans and peas with my first experiment. The main thing is I had a great time, and it got me outside!
Due to circumstances, I did not attempt to grow anything in 2008. Things have settled down, so I am going to plant some more stuff this year (2009). The property I currently reside on is a former landfill back in the 1960′s. Even with nearly three acres of available space, Square Foot Gardening works great to keep the roots out of potentially contaminated soil!
This method of growing can also yield much more than conventional row type gardening! Grow more in less space! Below is an example photo from thriftfyfun.com:
