Personal Stock Monitor Data Files

CB067963Here are some data files I made for Personal Stock Monitor. Should be able to just click and save the file. Some might have to right click & save, depends on browser.

ETFs – file size 460kb. This file contains every ETF and ETN currently listed (that I know of). File updated 12/16/09. I renamed every ticker to a coherent name, and added a memo column with category / classification. Some ETFs would fit more than one category, so I put them in the most relevant for my purposes.

They are also grouped in “account tabs” at the bottom. They can be moved around

The S/D column allows sorting by short or double

Eventually I plan to start posting updates in the ETF blog when new ETFs are created, or stop trading.

Read this post about a “neat cheat” to perform in Yahoo! Finance. Once at the post, look  toward the bottom.

Yahoo! Portfolios – file size 3.5meg.  This file replicates Yahoo! Finance except Over The Counter stocks, such as .OB and .PK (pink sheets). This file is extremely data intensive, so it would be a good idea to turn off automatic updates if you have a limited data plan internet access. To disable automatic updates in PSM, click on Options / Preferences / Quote Updates / Disable Automatic Updates. To do a manual update, click Online / Update All. This could take a while! Columns are pre-set for paper trading / position tracking. Change whatever you want!stockpaper

I am still working on renaming EVERY stock listed in this data file, adding ticker bookmarks and adding info into the notes. This is extremely time consuming, but when it is done, it will be a (hopefully) be a simple manner of just adding / deleting companies as they get listed / delisted. I was working in the Consumer Goods tab as of this post. File updated 12/16/09

Download the trial version of PSM and the Yahoo! Portfolios file. Open file in PSM, then do this:

  • Click on the Yahoo Indexes tab, bottom far right
  • If not sorted, click on the Name column so it sorts alphabetically, A – Z.
  • RIGHT CLICK on Basic Materials – Agricultural Chemicals
  • Put the mouse on Ticker Bookmarks to see links
  • Click on a link to check out the webpage

NEXT:

  • Click Basic Materials Account Tab, bottom far left
  • Double Click on Agricultural Chemicals folder
  • Double Click on Agrium, Inc
  • Should open a window. As you can see, lots of info here in the General tab!
  • Click Notes Tab (click once anywhere in notes to get rid of the blue)
  • Click OK
  • RIGHT CLICK on Agrium
  • Put the mouse on Ticker Bookmarks to see the different links I added

When right clicking on a company, notice “Jump Points” in the menu, just above Ticker Bookmarks. This is customizable also. I added multiple jump points to Yahoo! Finance, the Wall Street Journal, and a bunch of other sites for data mining.

—————————–play time!—————————

If not done so already, download the trial version of PSM, and the Yahoo! portfolios file above. Open the file in PSM:

There is a tab that contains all Yahoo! Indexes at the bottom, far right tab.The Indexes were manually renamed for the Sector – Industry tracked.

  1. Do an update
  2. Click on Yahoo! Indexes
  3. Click on % Change column, and sort by highest gain (should be allot of green if a decent day). May have to click column twice to get gainers at the top.
  4. Look at the highest gaining Sector – Industry
  5. Now click on the Sector tab it shows, then the Industry
  6. Look at the best performing stocks in that Industry
  7. Right click on the top stock, go to Chart / Historical. Open multiple charts and change details in different charts if desired.
  8. Refresh the main chart. Other charts will auto refresh with main

The MOST IMPORTANT to me when doing research is LOOKING AT THE VOLUME and AVG VOL of shares traded. Personally, I only consider stocks that trade over 500,000 shares Average Volume. The higher the volume, the easier to buy / sell.
