by Ilya Somin Ilya Somin is an assistant professor of law at George Mason University and an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute. Added to cato.org on July 11, 2009 This article appeared in the Detroit Free Press on July 16, 2009. Below is an excerpt. Read the full article HERE It’s not easy for a judge to undermine property rights further than the Supreme Court did in 2005 in Kelo v. City of New London. But Judge Sonia Sotomayor, now herself up for the Court, succeeded. In the 2006 case of Didden v. Village of Port Chester she signed on to perhaps the worst federal court property rights decision in recent memory. In Kelo the Court held that the government can condemn a person’s property and transfer it to someone else in order to promote economic development. In Didden, Judge Sotomayor’s panel went further, upholding the government’s condemnation of property after the owners refused to pay extortion money to a politically influential private developer.

By Paul B. Farrell, MarketWatch ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (MarketWatch) — “One of the disturbing facts of history is that so many civilizations collapse,” warns anthropologist Jared Diamond in “Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.” Many “civilizations share a sharp curve of decline. Indeed, a society’s demise may begin only a decade or two after it reaches its peak population, wealth and power.” Click this link to read the full article. Mr. Farrell has many EXCELLENT articles that are worth reading. Check the bottom of his page.

People are whining because they are being whacked with overdraft fees when using their debit cards, and there is not enough $ in their account to pay for the purchases. DO NOT OVERSPEND, and you will not incur overdraft fees. DUH! The best way to avoid excessive bank charges, credit card fees, etc. is to use a CREDIT UNION. Fortunately CASH is still KING. No worry about identity theft at the ATM, checkout lane, gas pump, etc. If cash stolen, it can only be spent once, and no hassles having to cancel cards & other issues. Companies that accept credit / debit cards factor in the cost of processing these into the products / services they sell. The “convenience” of using credit / debit makes everything MORE EXPENSIVE.

It’s time for some role playing! YOU ARE A Human Resources Executive, preparing for a job fair at the local government “employment” office. There is a huge line of people waiting to apply for the few openings you have, some have been camped out since the previous evening. You are dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, wanting to blend in with the crowd to get an idea of peoples attitudes. You shadow a reporter who is interviewing people waiting in line. This is what you hear: “I don’t mind doing any kind of work” from one person “This is the worst job I have ever applied for” from another person, who then says “I’m very annoyed foreigners are taking jobs that Americans need.” As the Human Resources Executive, you already know who is, and is not going to get a job.
It is amusing to read all the waa waa news blurbs about delcining cities, towns, etc. What is pathetic is people cannot accept the fact that… CHANGE HAPPENS! Quit whining, and expecting everyone else to hold you up. Hold yourself up. Do something about it. Adapt or be left behind. For those who whine about all the jobs being sent overseas. Start your own company. THEN look at everything involved with making a profit. Employment costs, raw materials costs, taxes, etc. If you want to maximize YOUR profits, what are YOU going to do? Go look at news blurbs about Flint, Michigan. That town is a great example of people doing something besides just crying in their polluted water. They are DOING something… CHANGING, ADAPTING! Change in my life? I had to adapt from grossing over $120,000 a year being self employed, to earning $7.40 an hour, averaging 29 hours a week. I am not receiving any govt assistance. I refuse to even apply. I am not a whiner. I take care of myself.
